The light falls onto a beautiful bikini clad women, perfect blue skies contrast against reddish sand dunes in the background. The model lets a stream of fine beach sand run through her fingers as the waves crash behind her. Cut to an image of a lone seal playing on the beach before diving into the sea. This is the Africa section of the 50th anniversary of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, shot in the Sossusvlei, Namibia.
This year for the anniversary edition seven continents were traversed and 17 spectacular world sites were featured along with the models, who all agreed that Namibia was by far the best location. “Namibia is magnificent, it’s so majestic and its terrain is so unreal, it’s impossible to describe it” said Adaora, one of the models featured in the Namibia shoot.
Emily, another model was heard saying: “photographs and film do not justify what it looks like here. I almost cried – it was like the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life.”
The fashion photographer does the landscapes justice – magnificent is the most common word used by those looking at the images. Sossusvlei in the Namibrand Nature Reserve is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Namibia, and for good reason. The landscapes are incredible. The Sports Illustrated team also used the nearby ghost town of Kolmanskop as a shoot location.
Sports Illustrated has an audience of around 70 million people around the globe. With the images from this photo shoot, luxury accommodation destinations in Namibia had better brace themselves for the influx of tourists. The swimsuit edition has let the cat out of the bag where Namibia’s secret travel destinations are concerned.
Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition is available on four different platforms, including an iPhone application and a tablet edition. The shoot was also premiered on the Travel Channel in February of this year.
