Namibia is a country of options and variety, and travellers will find that accommodation options in Namibian cities are no different.  Just as a traveller to Namibia is able to choose between visiting rugged mountain terrain or stark and silent desert, so too, when visiting Windhoek, the capital city.

Backpackers

For the younger crowd, or just the young at heart, backpackers are for the more adventurous traveller that needs only the basics.  Generally a backpacker’s lodge will offer dormitory style rooms for those just looking for a spot to rest their weary heads, or double rooms for couples.  Bathrooms and kitchen facilities are shared.  Many backpackers will also have a little bar and restaurant in-house where travellers can get to know each other.

Bed & Breakfasts

Otherwise known as a B&B, these are usually in smaller houses with no more than 6 rooms.  B&B’s offer a more relaxed stay in an intimate, family atmosphere. Breakfast is standard but a B&B will rarely include a restaurant for lunches and dinners.

Camping

Whether you love it or you hate it, camping is a very affordable option.  Camp sites offer demarcated spaces for your tent or caravan, and usually communal bathroom and kitchen facilities and electricity plug points. Camp sites can also be very social spots, share stories around the campfires while you barbecue your meat.

Guesthouses

With a minimum of 4 rooms, guesthouses in Windhoek offer a wide variety:  from the affordable down to earth option to more luxury rooms with gardens and swimming pools.  Guesthouses generally offer breakfast and some may have in-house restaurants.

Hotels

This is the more luxurious option.  Hotels can vary greatly in size, some may boast a hundred rooms or, in smaller boutique hotels, there will only be four or five.  Hotel rooms are en suite, have in-house restaurants, great food and a bar.

Lodge

Lodges are the accommodation you find on game farms, think bar under a lapa, thatched roofs and wooden beams.  Lodges can be high quality, luxurious establishments with a close connection to nature.  Rooms in lodges are generally built to accentuate the natural surroundings of the area.

Self-Catering

Self catering can also range from luxury to rustic, but are usually fully equipped homes or apartments that serve as your home away from home.

Visitors to Namibia may want to try various accommodation options, first time visitors may prefer the relative safety and convenience of a B&B or hotel, while those who frequently travel to Namibia may well prefer self-catering.  Windhoek offers accommodation to suit all requirements.
