Backpacking Accommodation in Namibia

Backpacking Namibia

Those who are used to staying in backpackers or hostels, may be in for a pleasant surprise on a trip to Namibia.  Traditionally backpackers accommodation is cheap and only offers the bare essentials – however, in Namibia you will find that owners of these establishments will often go the extra mile to ensure the comfort of your stay.

What is backpackers accommodation?

Backpackers accommodation is recognised by the Namibian board of tourism.  For the cheapest options dorm rooms are available where you would share with other people.

Double bunk beds are the norm in accommodation like this – sleeping 4, 8 or 12 people in a room, depending on your budget.  It is of course communal space, so light sleepers are advised to pack ear plugs.

Ablutions are also shared, so courtesy to others goes without saying.

For couples or for the more discerning budget traveller, one or two private rooms are usually available at a slightly higher price.  These will also come with the own bathrooms, but not always.

There are usually lockers or somewhere to stash your valuables in each room, while the majority of backpackers will also offer shared kitchen facilities where you can cook your own meals.

It is not uncommon for travellers to spend extended amounts of time at a backpackers because they offer a home away from home atmosphere with like-minded people.

This accommodation type is really great for single travellers, or those looking to make friends.  Usually there will be a bar and common room where residents mingle.  After a week or two in a backpackers some lifelong friendships could easily be made.

Don’t knock it unless you have tried it

Those who are used to staying in self-catering units or large anonymous hotels could be well advised to try out the backpacker vibe, if only for one leg of a Namibian trip.  There is something quite pleasant about settling down into your backpackers bar with an ice cold beer after a day of exploring the treasures Namibia has to offer.

Soon you will be exchanging stories with the group next to you, and the next thing you know, you have met some wonderful people and your holiday has been all the richer for it.

Backpack type accommodation can be found in establishments that offer accommodation in Windhoek and other larger cities as well as in the smaller towns such as Luderitz.
