Camping in Namibia

Camping in Namibia

You can’t beat camping for a true taste of Adventure. Camping transports you back to the days when it was man against the elements, when only a thin sheet of canvas protected explorers from the dangers of the wild.  Although lodgings have improved vastly since the time of the Great White Hunter, the earth is closer when you are camping.

The sights, smells and sounds of nature are all around you – undiluted by thick walls and the trappings of civilisation.  Unfettered by set meal times, you are free to rise at dawn and get your day’s adventure under way, and it is easy to move to greener pastures when your accommodation is of the ‘pack up and go’ variety.

Unless you are travelling from close by, you would need to take advantage of a tented camp instead of transporting all your own gear for the trip, but car hire companies are increasingly offering the option to hire camping equipment as well, so you can still rough-it if you are coming from abroad.

With camping, it is possible to get more days for your dollar than with hotel, guest house or lodge accommodation in Namibia, meaning you can stay longer and experience more.  The selection of camp-sites is as varied as the landscape itself and these days exquisite luxury is offered under canvas.

You can pitch your tent on the barren and rocky flats around the Fish River Canyon, on the banks of the Orange or Kunene Rivers, among the drifting sands of the Namib, in the endless plains of Etosha or along the wind-swept coastline.

You can choose from shady lawned sites or untamed places dotted with thorn trees.  Most camp-sites offer ablution facilities with hot and cold water as well as scullery areas. Alternatively, tented camps are available with luxuriously furnished tents and private bathrooms.

The latest innovation is the community camp site, run by local tribesmen.  Proceeds from these ventures go straight back in to the community and the proud proprietors will go out of their way to make you feel at home here.
