The dictionary meaning of the word ‘lodge’ is to “provide accommodation in return for payment”, but there is much more to lodge accommodation than just that simple provision. This form of accommodation in Namibia has become increasingly popular and proprietors have to add value to their offerings, while remaining competitive price-wise, in order to stay in the game.
Generally lodges are found on the outskirts of cities, with the exception of a few well-known accommodation chains, and can be loosely divided into two groups – one featuring the rooms and facilities under one roof, and the second with a central dining area and freestanding or semi-detached sleeping units.
These separate accommodations are becoming increasingly interesting and may take the form of rondavels (round huts), permanent tents and even caves. Lately, most lodges take an eco-friendly approach to tourism, and in wilderness areas, they may be designed to blend unobtrusively into the environment. Natural locally-produced building materials and traditional art and décor are often key features.
The most popular types of lodge accommodation are:
- Country Lodges – These facilities are like a hotel in the countryside and provide all meals during your stay.
- Safari Lodges – With the focus on nature in all its glory, these lodges offer various optional activities, such as desert drives, and guests are able to choose from various dining options.
- Bush Lodges – Located in more remote areas, nature and wildlife activities are the focus here and packages are generally all inclusive with activities such as guided fishing or hiking on offer.
- Game Lodges – Fully inclusive stays are standard at these resorts and they are usually located in, or close to, game reserves with the emphasis on escorted game viewing activities.
These types of lodges are at the more luxurious end of the scale and they are by no means the only kind available. Lodges offering a wide range of standards, locations and prices are available to suit the needs of every traveller.
In Namibia, you are assured of comfort and friendly hospitality, regardless of the price range that you choose.
