Packing for Namibia

Packing for Namibia

Whether you are going for an action packed adventure holiday, a Namibia safari, or staying in luxury accommodation in Windhoek, packing for your trip can be tricky. Namibia is made up of large parts of desert, and an otherwise harsh and arid landscape which means you need to be prepared for the whole range of temperatures, without having to lug your entire wardrobe along with you.  Here are a few tips to help you decide what to take and what to leave behind.

First and foremost don’t forget the power of the African sun, its effects are lasting. Bring along a good sunscreen with a high SPF and apply to it to all exposed parts every day.  Even if the air feels cool the sun’s rays can still burn you and that damage is permanent.

In line with sun safety, be sure to bring a quality pair of sunglasses with, your shades should block 100% of UV rays and most of the HEV rays from the sun.  It is also preferable to get sunglasses with wrap around frames to limit the sun’s direct exposure to your eyes.

Secondly, it gets cold in Namibia at night and early mornings, so bring along at least one really warm winter jacket, gloves and a beanie.

Thirdly, it gets hot in Namibia, what can we say, deserts are known for their extreme temperatures, bring shorts, T-shirts and swim wear. Vacations in Namibia tend to be full of activity that usually involves getting dirty and dusty and being outdoors, so make sure you are comfortable and can move easily.

Finally, bring what you need to feed your soul, if you are an artist, bring your sketchpad, a writer, bring your notepad, bring your meditation music and those philosophy books you have been meaning to read but never got around to.  The Namibian landscape inspires creativity and self-reflection so come prepared.

On a final point when it comes to packing for Namibia, this is not a holiday where you come to see and be seen, so leave behind the expensive shoes and the mini-skirts.  This trip is about getting in touch with the natural world and your true self, bring your comfiest everything, and just for the short while that you are here, forget about what you look like and just enjoy.
