Namibia Travel Tips
- On Arrival: If you are doing a self-drive tour around Namibia, do NOT drive long distances directly after your flight to the country. You will be tired after your flight and distances between places in Namibia are long. Rather spend your first night in the country in Windhoek, recover from your flight, stock up on your provisions and then undertake the first leg of your journey the following day.
- Visa Requirements: Check the visa requirements for your country before traveling to Namibia. Many nationalities, including citizens from the United States, Canada, the European Union, and several other countries, can enter Namibia for tourism purposes without a visa for up to 90 days. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.
- Best Time to Visit: Namibia has a desert climate, and the best time to visit depends on your preferences and the activities you plan to undertake. The cooler winter months from May to September are popular for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources. The summer months from November to March bring higher temperatures but also offer the opportunity to see newborn animals and lush landscapes.
- Health and Safety: Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic well in advance to check if any vaccinations or medications are recommended for your trip to Namibia. It’s also advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses. Namibia is generally a safe destination, but it’s always wise to take basic precautions such as securing your belongings, using reputable transportation, and being aware of your surroundings.
- Transportation: Namibia is vast, and having a reliable mode of transportation is essential for exploring the country. Renting a car is a popular option, allowing you the freedom to travel at your own pace. The road network is generally good, but be prepared for long distances between destinations and limited services in remote areas. Alternatively, guided tours and transfers are available for specific regions and attractions.
- Currency and Payments: The currency in Namibia is the Namibian Dollar (NAD), but South African Rand (ZAR) is also accepted everywhere. Credit cards are widely accepted in larger establishments, but it’s advisable to carry cash, especially in rural areas and for small purchases. ATMs are available in major towns and cities.
- Respect Local Customs and Culture: Namibia has a rich cultural heritage, and it’s important to respect local customs and traditions. When visiting rural communities, seek permission before taking photographs and follow any guidelines provided by your guide or host. Dress modestly, especially when visiting traditional villages or religious sites.
- Pack Appropriately: Namibia’s weather can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year. Pack lightweight and breathable clothing for the daytime, including hats and sunscreen to protect against the sun. However, it can get chilly at night, especially in desert areas, so bring layers and warmer clothing. Comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle are also recommended.
- Water and Hydration: Ensure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially in hot and arid regions. Tap water in Namibia’s major towns and cities is generally safe to drink, but it’s advisable to carry a reusable water bottle and consider purchasing bottled water in remote areas or when camping.
- Wildlife Viewing: If you plan to go on a safari or wildlife viewing activities, follow the instructions of your guide and respect the animals’ space. Keep a safe distance and avoid any actions that may disturb or harm the wildlife. Do not feed the animals, as it can have detrimental effects on their behavior and health.
- Photography: Namibia offers incredible photo opportunities, so be sure to bring your camera and spare batteries. Keep in mind that some indigenous communities may have specific guidelines regarding photography, so always ask for permission before taking pictures of people or their belongings.
Remember to research and plan your itinerary in advance to make the most of your time in Namibia. Enjoy the stunning landscapes, unique wildlife, and warm hospitality that the country has to offer!
