Waterberg Plateau National Park

The Waterberg Plateau National Park

One of North-Central Namibia’s Greatest Attractions

The Waterberg Plateau National Park rises like a fortress above Namibia’s low-lying central savannah, a bastion in defence of some of the country’s most prized wildlife species.

This elevated wonderland, three hours’ drive from Windhoek, presents boundless opportunities to explore a unique destination on foot and at your leisure.

It’s a truly sublime retreat into the peace that Namibia’s vast landscapes offer.

About the Waterberg Plateau National Park

This national park centres around a huge tabletop mountain, 50km long and 16km wide that rises 200m above the surrounding plains.

It’s the only breeding ground of the Cape vulture in Namibia, and the isolated areas on top of the mountain are a haven for rare, endangered species like roan antelope, white rhino, and sable antelope.

Over 200 birds inhabit the slopes of this berg and the Verreaux’s eagle swirls on the thermals above.

Things to Do While Visiting the Waterberg Plateau National Park

Unlike most Namibian national parks, the park doesn’t permit self-drive safaris in this sensitive area, but you can join one of the morning or afternoon guided drives.

Hiking is by far the most popular pastime in this pristine area, taking place on short, marked trails, or challenging multi-day wilderness trails.

Naturally, it’s a hotspot for keen birders, too.

Other key points in the Waterberg Plateau National Park include a military cemetery commemorating those who perished in the 1904 Battle of Waterberg, and a series of 200-million-year-old dinosaur footprints in the heart of the park.

Things to Do Near the Waterberg Plateau National Park

Cultural trips to nearby Herero villages depart from the park and there are many other conservation venues to explore in this area. These include:
