Why Choose Arebbusch Lodge for Birdwatching?
Visitors to Arebbusch Lodge will find no shortage of opportunities for ticking some of Namibia’s 699 bird species off your list.
Arebbusch Travel Lodge is currently engaged with the Namibia Bird Club in a project to document as many of the birds on the property.
So far, this exercise has revealed that Arebbusch is home to more than 38 of these avian treasures, including the Rosy-Faced lovebird, one of Africa’s only parrots and possibly the cutest. We look forward to identifying many more in collaboration with the Namibia Bird Club and adding our sightings to the list of birds found in the gardens at Arebbusch.
Other colorful species include the lovely blue waxbill, feisty Southern Red Bishop, Marico Sunbird, Swallow Tailed Bee-eater, and entertaining Cape glossy and violet-backed starlings.
Some of the other dowdier, but no less interesting, species include:
- Grey-backed camaroptera
- Pririt Batis
- Grey Go-Away Bird
- White-backed Mousebird
- Chestnut-vented tit-babbler
- Marico flycatcher
- African Palm Swift
- Rock martin
- Common Scimitarbill
Many of Namibia’s other common types of birds are represented at Arebbusch Travel Lodge, including:
- Finches – Red-Headed and Scaly Feathered Finches
- Whydahs – Shaft-Tailed Whydah and Long-Tailed Paradise Whydah
- Swifts – Bradfield’s and Little Swifts
Black-Chested Prinias, White Browed Sparrow-Weavers, Red-Billed Spurfowl, Greater Striped Swallows, Cape Wagtails, and Black-Faced Waxbills make up the count at Arebbusch Travel Lodge.
Or course, you’ll also get to see local household favorites such as the House Sparrow, Pied Crow, Speckled Pigeons, Black-Throated Canaries, and Laughing Doves.
Bird-watching Options at Arebbusch Travel Lodge
If you’re planning to visit for the day, relax in the restaurant listening to the high-pitched trill of the Burnt-Necked Eremomela, chattering of Southern-Masked Weavers, and urgings of the Cape Turtle Dove. All the while, steely eyed Acacia Pied Barbets and African Red-Eyed Bulbuls keep watch over the proceedings.
There’s no better way to enjoy fantastic local and international fare during your visit to Windhoek. If you’d rather visit solely for the purpose of bird-watching, you’re welcome to enjoy the experience without eating, but few can resist a slice of our cake with a cup of tea or coffee when they visit.
At Arebbusch, you’ve also got the option to grab a grilled steak or a delicious wood-fired pizza fresh from the oven.
Overnight guests have even more options for ticking our resident species off their list with full access to all the facilities of the lodge, its restaurants and magnificent surrounds. You can even relax by the pool with your binoculars, bird book, and cocktail in hand.
If you’d like a more intensive experience, you can take part in a guided tour in the company of an experienced local bird-watching tour guide. Please book in advance for this experience.
